Reducing CO2 emissions and imports of primary energy sources are among the objectives of the European Union. One option is to gasify local residual biomass and convert it into high-value gaseous fuels. The production of gaseous fuels from domestic biomass will reduce the dependence of the transport and electricity sectors on oil and natural gas imports. Furthermore, the use of biological residues avoids conflicts with food production and other land uses, reducing CO2 emissions. In this context, AIRE wants to develop an integrated and flexible system to generate electricity and store the surplus in two different ways, both aimed at producing Bio-SNG from the gasification of biomass and electricity by ICE in a distributed network. The first consists in the production of Bio-SNG from residual biomass with an innovative gasification technology (100 kWth double fluidized bed gasifier) and integrated gas conditioning with an advanced methanation reactor (methane yield of 2-5 Nm3/ h): the final objective is to test an integrated pilot plant to obtain synthetic natural gas.
