Overview

The body of knowledge that scientists have developed within the Cartesian paradigm, and subsequently within the mechanistic, reductionist, and finally materialist paradigms, has profoundly shaped Western science and its remarkable achievements. Today, however, we must acknowledge the irreversible crisis of this paradigm. In recent years, we have come to understand that science and common sense are not isolated from one another, but mutually influence each other: major scientific theories, often mediated by an unprepared media system, enter the cultural knowledge of a population through schools and popular dissemination, thereby shaping worldviews, beliefs, lifestyles, and ultimately common sense. Conversely, researchers themselves are influenced by the assumptions of common sense and the sociocultural environment in which they operate, which in turn affects the boundaries of research.

Many things, however, are changing in the world of medicine, and new discoveries are opening up fresh perspectives on reality. Emerging semantic frameworks are creating a new paradigm in which physicians recognize that there is no single medicine; instead, integrating multiple therapeutic approaches better meets the needs of patients experiencing illness. In this vision, patients are active and indispensable participants in determining their own well-being, health, and healing process.

Integrated medicine combines conventional medicine with other therapeutic techniques not typically taught in Western universities. In addition to incorporating the extraordinary advances of technology and pharmacology, integrated medicine places the human being at the center of care, considering nutrition, lifestyle, emotional experiences, and, ultimately, mind-body interactions.

A true physician is not someone who adheres exclusively to one form of medicine, nor a shaman, nor a New Age practitioner as outdated epistemological views often suggest. A true physician constantly reflects on the mystery of healing, drawing heuristic insights from professional experience. A true physician seeks to possess the widest possible array of tools to heal the specific patient they encounter in the challenges of everyday life.

A physician who follows the principles of integration is aware that their role is fundamentally maieutic: to draw out the patient’s own self-healing potential. The ideal medical act is one that activates healing from within.
