Course Program and Learning Objectives

The course is intended for healthcare personnel—particularly physicians and nurses—working in RSAs who wish to be involved in clinical risk management and patient safety (geriatricians, general practitioners, occupational physicians, nurses, and all other healthcare professionals).

The learning objectives focus on the development of specific knowledge and skills, including:

  • clinical risk management and the human factor in healthcare (ability to identify hazardous situations, assess risk, and implement preventive measures according to the PDSA model);
  • use of reporting and learning systems, with particular reference to reactive incident analysis techniques (significant event audits, root cause analysis, etc.) and proactive methods (FMECA);
  • knowledge of the most important care safety practices in RSAs (prevention of healthcare-associated infections, including SARS-CoV-2; handover; NEWS; SBAR; prevention of nutritional risk; prevention of medication errors; delirium; pressure injuries; prevention of thromboembolism; healthcare-associated infections, etc.);
  • ability to implement and disseminate care safety practices;
  • knowledge of the regulatory framework and the professional responsibilities arising from failure to apply internationally recognized best practices for geriatric patient care;
  • non-technical skills such as leadership, teamwork, situational awareness, and stress management.

The training program consists of 40 hours of pre-recorded lessons, for a total of 12 CFU (university credits).
