Thinking about developing a career in international trade?

The Master in Export Management and International Trade has been designed by two prestigious institutions, Marconi University and the Institute of Export & International Trade in consultation with international trade experts.

In a globalized and complex context, the Master has been designed to meet the current needs of the market, aiming to train international trade managers in facilitating and optimizing international business transactions and ensuring the smooth flow of goods and services across borders.

To be effective in this role, managers and professionals should possess a combination of skills and knowledge, including:

ability to conduct market research to identify potential markets, assess market trends and address challenges related to export operations;

build capacity to manage logistics processes and supply chains to ensure efficient and cost-effective transportation of goods, as well as competencies of shipping, freight forwarding and customs clearance methods;

competencies in project planning, organization and execution to ensure successful export operations;

understand financial aspects related to international trade – including pricing strategies, currency exchange and payment terms – and of the modes for assessing and mitigating risks associated with international trade;

have a good working knowledge of international trade regulations;

aptitude to build and maintain strong relationships with clients, distributors, buyers and partners, developing effective communication skills to interact with them in an effective way;

flexibility to adapt to different cultures, business practices and regulatory environments;

familiarity with export management software and tools, new technologies and social media and with artificial intelligence systems capable of optimizing internationalization strategies.

Program modules

The Master is organized into six modules:

Module 1 – Fundamentals of International Business

This module has been designed to provide a broad knowledge and understanding of the conditions under which international traders must operate their business and how business is affected by changes in the political, economic, social, and technological environment both nationally and internationally. Students will also be provided with a basic knowledge of the law relating to international trade with a focus on the law of contract, sale of goods and agency law. This module will also introduce the basic marketing concept and the principles and practices of international marketing, developing an understanding of the part culture plays in the sales process.

Module 2 – Environmental Global Marketplace Analysis

Sample – In this module students will be provided with a specific knowledge of the conditions under which international traders must operate their business.
Specifically, the module provides students with knowledge and skills in strategic analysis, market analysis, competitive strategy, global accounting, data-driven decision making and industrial organization. The module will provide both theoretical knowledge and operational approaches, through the use of operational tools for strategic analysis that will be illustrated during the lessons.

Module 3 – International Logistics, Purchasing, Distribution, Transportation & Documentation

This module has been designed to provide a broad knowledge and understanding of the role and importance of logistics in an international context. It will focus on areas of international logistics and purchasing processes, such as cost-effective means of exporting and importing, management and planning of customs regulations and facilitation of logistics and supply-chain systems. By the end of this module, students will be able to maximise the effectiveness of an organisation’s distribution strategy and global sourcing policy and be able to confidently approach UK import and export regulations.

Module 4 – International Trade Management & Marketing Strategy

Successful international trade management requires a multidisciplinary approach and it’s importance to stay updated on global trade trends and regulatory changes to adapt strategies effectively. For these reasons, in this module students will be provided with a specific background relating to planning, execution and oversight of activities related to the exchange of goods and services between countries. In particular, some key aspects that will be explained are related to Market Research and Analysis, Marketplace Research Tools, Import and Export Regulations, Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Cultural and Communication Skills, Economic and Political Analysis, Sustainability and Ethical Considerations.

Module 5 – Legal, Finance & Risk Management

This module provides students with an understanding of the keys to profitability in their business, and the most appropriate sources of finance to maximise such profits. Students are also required to evaluate and attempt to reduce the various risks that are common to all international trade, including exchange risk, country and buyer credit risk and to choose and operate the most appropriate methods of payment.
We will also look at the risks in International Trade, how they arise and how they can be managed effectively – especially in the environment of international trade where additional risks will arise through differences.
This module will also involve the students to explore how UK Common Law and equity have evolved in terms of judiciary (courts and judges), with increasing input by statute from the legislature (parliament) subject, latterly, to overseas influences – the European Union and international conventions.

Module 6 – Export Management in the Age of Digitalisation: How to Find customs and commercial partners

Export management in the age of digitalization has been significantly transformed by technology, making it more efficient and accessible and changing the way to find customs and commercial partners, using digital tools and strategies. In this new paradigm, Online Marketplaces and B2B Platforms, Social Media and Networking, Digital Trade Shows and Webinars, E-Commerce and Digital Marketing, Virtual Trade Missions and Matchmaking Events, Blockchain and Smart Contracts are just some of the factors that will influence international exchanges and companies’ penetration strategies in foreign markets. For this reason, knowing those specific areas becomes crucial for setting up a specific internationalization strategy and being successful in an increasingly competitive and interconnected market.

Student Project Work

At the end of the Master, the students will present a project work in a plenary session. The project work will be assigned by the Scientific Committee of the Master. For this task, the students will work independently but, if needed, they can request information from the teaching staff via email.

Furthermore, to finalize the drafting of the project work, each student will have up to 5 hours available (10% of the project work’s hours amount) in one-to-one meetings with the Master’s faculty. Usually, the length of the project work can vary from 40 to 60 pages. All the format details will be provided at a later stage.

As concerns the assessment and marking of the project work, this will be performed by a commission made of three professors or members of the Scientific Committee that has to include the project work supervisor.

Once the Master is completed, the transcript will contain the final score according to both the UK and Italian grading system.

Final assessment

The final evaluation consists of a presentation of the project work in front of the Master’s Scientific Committee.

Entry requirements

Applicants must hold a Laurea Triennale or equivalent degree.

8.500 € / 7.400 GBP

UniMarconi and Institute of Export & International Trade provide two scholarships covering 50% of the tuition fee for the first two students enrolled.

Reserved area

All the documents – PPT, Word and operative tools – shown by the teachers during the lessons will be available in the reserved area to which students can access with their credentials. Any updates or any other documents that may be necessary, will also be uploaded to the reserved area (UniMarconi)

Assessment

Upon completion of each module, it will be possible to take online self-assessment tests to assess the level of learning achieved.
